art and the harlem renaissance

The Harlem Renaissance helped shape not only black culture, but infiltrated and influenced the art, literature, and music of all early twentieth century America. This influence over the arts helped give the new emerging black culture a face, an identity. With ‘new negro’ idealism now made tangible, African-Americans were more an enabled to state a claim as being part of this young, thriving, early twentieth century America. No longer could African-Americans be over looked. This black culture had something; soul and pride. This sparked the interest not only of white America, but it seemed to hold the attention of the entire world.

The Harlem Renaissance became famous for many reasons. It was new, it was original and it was in your face. This period grabbed my attention when I first saw the much praised art of it’s time. The very one dimensional images and the bright colors bare uncanny similarities to the byzantine art from western europe not only in appearance, but also in meaning. The art that was prevalent in early 1900s America was realism paintings, however black art at this time rarely touched realism. What was it about this new emerging art style that grabbed the hungry eyes of blacks and whites alike? African-American artists during this time got rid of depth, dimension and realism and replaced it with soul, meaning and ideals. This new style of art told a story. The subjects painted were not portrayed as realistic figures, as in the past, but rather as symbols. This loss of humanity in these paintings was able to gain a voice for African-American idealism. These symbol like personas were as important to this time period, as Da Vinci was to the Sistine Chapel.

Though much ground was gained during the Harlem Renaissance, it came at a price. It seemed that participants in this black revival were divided on every issue. These participants were primarily writers, musicians and artists. There disagreements were very based on the way this new ‘black art’ expressed itself. Many believed that this  new art should be used to appease whites. Others did the exact opposite and flaunted black pride for the sake of only agitation. Another problem facing this new pop culture was falling into a stereotype. Black clubs were perhaps too often inviting to whites as some sort of show not as the massive cultural movement and revival that was happening with the hearts of blacks all over. Lastly, another major controversy was the question if black art was being used too much as propaganda and had totally lost the identity of being art at all. These questions for this very young movement were no more out of line than the questioning of a child passionate about living and figuring out how to do so.

catch'n'release

Catch n' release, catch n' release

O' thats all you do...

Catchin' to release, catchin' to release

O' WHY CANT YOU CHOOSE?

and me?

Oh, well im just a kitten caught in a tree.

screaming, "GET ME DOWN FROM HERE PLEASE!"

...but if you dare to try

I'll hiss, kick and cry!

You see, "I like being way up high." (honestly)

...its just,

...its just this idea of being caught.

Not really wanted not really belonging.

its words like this that make me distraught.

...but still I am willing to be caught.

call me Zachaeus, but i need an invitation.

'cuz I'd rather be caught in a tree

and wait for the day you notice me.

than wander off with no motivation

wondering "what the hells wrong with me,"

wishin' i was at least caught by that tree.

Catch n' release, catch n' release

hopin' you'll notice me.

Catchin' to release, catchin' to release

...but I'll keep climbing this tree!

wrote this well (not) celebrating my second 4th of july in a row in bolivia

Happy birthday America!

Go celebrate rebellion!

A country of witches,

BURN 'EM DOWN!

Happy birthday America!

Go kill another billion!

The fatherless and the bitches,

BURN 'EM DOWN!

-candles on a cake, a breath you take, a wish you make!

For: Greed, Lust and Poverty

-thankyou Mr. Washington

hold me now!

We are all slaves to the platform.
"Git' in line! EVERYONE IN UNIFORM!"

We don't know what to do... so we do the best we can.
We don't know much of You... so we clutch at clutching hands.

We put our hopes into prayers,
and our prayers to the air.
We pray to God that He's actually there.

... and if He is, could He just...

hold me now? HOLD ME NOW!

Now my whole life has been a search for chariots of fire.
"Search in every church, with a 'holy ghost desire."

BARELY MADE IT TO THE DEVIL'S KNEES BEFORE I HAD TO DIE!

... now my hopes are in my prayers, and my prayers to the air.
I'm praying, "Dear God are you actually there?"

and if you are "HOLD ME NOW! HOLD ME NOW! HOLD ME NOW!"

some free verse for my thoughts.

Oh you gluttonous hummingbird
too much weight on your wings.
oh what a pitiful thing!

Oh I'm nothing short of something absurd,
the songs of redemption that i sing.
Oh what a pitiful thing!

OH WHAT A PITIFUL thing
THAT THE PITIFUL sing!
OH WHAT A PITIFUL song
THAT THE PITIFUL sung!

Oh   --------------> gOD!

Vanity of vanities, all is vanity
Wisdom is just a fogged mirror
Vanity of vanities, all is vanity
We stared into her but saw nothing clearer.

In Closing:

the beard of Aaron may grow long
but it will never reach my outstreached hand.
live you life and do not one this wrong,
because even moses never saw the promised land.

This Divine Chaos

Does All This Matter Matter?

-Does everything we do matter, or does nothing matter?
We all have a gut response to answer this question. I believe if we were to look deeply into this question, our 'gut' response would be in more twists than a double windsor choking everything we may think we know.

What we do know (fact):

For every action there is an equal and opposite reaction. This is the third of Newton's laws. This is an unquestionable law of life.

What we aren't exactly sure of (theory):

The Butterfly Effect, which is dependent on the chaos theory, is a theory whose origins were birthed from many different scientists between the years 1890 to 1963.

In a nutshell, the butterfly effect states that the air displaced by a  butterfly flapping his wings off the coast of Africa has enough potential to produce a hurricane off the east of coast of the United States. There is nothing significant in the weightless flap of the butterfly, but rather in the atmosphere and position that the butterfly is in.

...I believe this fact and theory walk hand in hand. Keep them in mind.

-So how does this relate to the actions we take in life?

Right now you are taking the time to read this theory. You will spend approximately five minutes to read this, and let's give five minutes for you to think about this theory.

Now think of what you would have been doing had you not stumbled across this blog. The action of you reading this is causing a reaction that is hindering you from completing the set action that would have been. This action and reaction effects not only your present, but also your future.

You may think that after you stop reading this your life will presume to be normal, as if this reading never happened. Let's say after you are done reading you complete every action that would have occurred. But you are now 10 to 15 minutes delayed in every action. Eventually this small expanse of time will throw of the course of your entire life.  For example, you finish reading you then hop in your car, now ten minutes delayed, and because of that ten minute delay you accidently avoid a car accident you would have been in if you had left ten mintues earlier. That is a good thing. Right?

Let's go further. Now because you are ten minutes delayed and avoided the car accident, you have now offset the course of the other driver with which you would have hit. The course of his life is now thrown off a bit. What you don't know, however, is the other driver now (because he never got in an accident with you)  accidently ran a stop sign, running over and killing a young girl who skipped happily home to where her mother promised to have cookies waiting. Good thing or bad?

-Are not both these scenarios bad or are they both good? Which of these situations was 'suppose' to happen? Right?

Now ten minutes may seem like a long time, so choose an action the takes a shorter expanse of time to be completed. i.e. holding your breath, closing your eyes etc. Applying the same principle as before, we can see how even the simplest decisions we choose will eventually effect us in some degree. The larger the decision, of course you would think, the larger the impact or reaction. But given the right time and conditions even the smallest decisions can cause a chain reaction leading to huge difference. The importance of the action does not matter. What matters is the fact that it will change your life as well as those around you.

Closing Question:

Is everything subject to random chaos or does everything happen for a reason? Were you suppose to read this or is your life suddenly set way off course? Nothing you will ever do will set your life on the course it was once headed. Do people just bounce of each other like ping-pong balls down a rocky  mountain side? Chaotic? Planned? Is God playing dice with life?

-If your answer is that life is preordained by some higher power, accept your fate. Does that mean the next time you get sick, or a family member dies it is God's will? Does that also mean to pray against such atrocities would be praying against the exact will of God?

-If your answer is that life is just random chaos, it doesn't matter what you do life is what it is. Being action-less is not an option. This leaves you one choice, being part of the chaos!

Strike the Match!

Everything starts where it ends:

The idea of starting a blog first came to me when a friend (Melissa) said to me with a gentle hint of sarcasm, "I like your mind." I laughed and thought nothing of it. A short time later, an old friend commented on an art piece I had done stating the same phrase, "I like your mind." Coincidence? "My mind" has always been expressed through art or music. There has always been a bit of irony between me and these outlets of expression. Something has always been lost in the translation of color or noise. For instance, I hate loud obnoxious music, but about 60% of the music I produce falls under the 'hardcore/metal/dumb' genre. Instead of the low tone blues/bluegrass/folk music my heart melts for, my throat melts in producing ridiculous yelps of madness into a microphone for a bunch of hoodlems who cannot even tell what I am saying. Another case of irony, the fact that I love life in black in white. Not a boring life, but a literal life; a life that can be figured out, and makes sense, in your head. Despite my love for realism, my paintings honestly have no meaning. As well as having no meaning, they are done in the bright colorful fashion that is appealing to only those tripping on acid. It is within this loss of meaning, during the translation of my paint to canvas (or tongue to motion), that comes a pursuit of clarity.

To Clarify:

-i hate capitalizing "i" when pertaining to myself. Call me buddhist.
-this blog will probably be explicit. With the words in the English language it is very hard to be precise with emotion. So, if using more 'colorful' words bothers you, i am by no means trying to offend you. i want this blog to be me in my most raw state, perhaps one day i will be refined enough to cringe at thoughts of using explicit language.
-there will be no common thread throughout these blogs. Some days i will write about theology, some days i might write a poem. Who knows? However, i will try to write them once a day, even if they are not posted everyday.
-These blogs may at time seem critical, but i assure you, i speak my opinion, not truth. i feel that if more people would speak there opinions (with action) truth could be found.
- I am not a good writer, please be patient. If something does not come across clearly, please ask me to refraze<----oh i also like to use 'f' in place of 'ph.'

The Closing Note:

We have to establish one solid principle: the 'playing board' which these posts will be played off of. You cannot play monopoly on a chess board, no more than you can discuss politics off the basis of anarchy, or establishing peace through war. Throughout these blogs many religions will be mentioned and many ways of thinking will be used, even if i do not necessarily agree with them. So please, if i am talking about the immediate mayan doomsday of 2012 (which i will) don't throw at me how Jesus is going to rapture you in the glory cloud and a bunch of Escotology non-sense.

...LETS DO THIS!
